How to teach a dog to perform commands?

“There are no bad students — there are bad teachers.” Remember this phrase? It does not lose its relevance in the case of the education and training of dogs. 99% of pet’s success depends on the knowledge of the owner and the correct approach to the lessons. Yes, each dog is individual, and often there are four-legged friends of a person, completely refusing to execute commands. But to anyone, even the most capricious pet, you can find an approach. The main thing is to be attentive, take into account the pedigree and individual characteristics of the dog, set correct tasks for it and use effective methods of motivation. On the latter and will be discussed in our article.
Before proceeding to the methods of motivation, we define what it is. For clarity, consider an example.
Suppose you want to teach a dog to overcome a snake from obstacles, but it is not in a hurry to accomplish the task set for it, since it sees no need in it. In order to achieve a result, you need to interest the dog, encourage it to perform a specific action. This is the motivation, it is she who forms the behavior of the dog. But how to cause interest, how to teach a dog to execute commands?
Several methods of motivation come to the rescue, the main of which are food, verbal (intonational), power, play, etc. How you get your pet interested depends directly on its character, temperament, and also on its preferences. For example, active, energetic dogs will gladly fulfill their task for the prospect of chasing a favorite ball. This is a game method of motivation.
How to teach a dog to perform commands?
Obsessive, sensitive dogs are ready to please the owner with anything, just to earn his approval and verbal praise. This is the intonation (or verbal) method of motivation. Other dogs are most effectively influenced by power methods: in particular, the pressure on the dog’s croup causes it to perform the “sit” command. But food motivation is considered to be the most effective (especially for puppies and young dogs), because it is based on the needs of livelihoods (the need for food) and by default is the strongest.
Contrary to popular belief, not every dog perceives words of approval as praise. Many self-sufficient pets generally relate to words and intonation rather indifferently. The owner of such a dog first thing is to earn her respect and love – and only after that his intonation will become important for the pet.
If the dog refuses to comply with the command, it is about lack of motivation. Review your approach to training and make adjustments to it.
Think, have you ever met a dog completely indifferent to delicacies? There is hardly a person who will answer this question in the affirmative, because our pets, like us, are not alien to the desire to taste goodies. The use of treats in the training and educational process allows you to attract and maintain the interest of the dog to work. But it is important to understand that delicacies are praise, not food. The dog should be encouraged only in the case of the correct execution of the command, only in this way will it learn the lesson and remember the information given to it. Excessive and inconsistent treat of delicacies will not only condemn your idea to failure, but also contribute to the collection of excess weight from the pet, which will lead to further health problems. And once we touched on this issue, it should be noted that not all delicacies are equally useful for a dog.
What delicacy to give when training?
Food from the table (for example, cut into small pieces of sausage), of course, will attract the attention of the pet, but will not bring him any good. And this is at best. At worst, such a treat will lead to indigestion, as human delicacies are absolutely not suitable for feeding pets.
The most competent solution is to use special treats for dogs, as they are not only very tasty, but also incredibly useful. Of course, if we are talking about quality lines. You need to choose delicacies made from natural meat, without using artificial colors.
If you wish, you can choose preventive delicacies that, in addition to saturating the body with vitamins, support the health of the teeth and oral cavity and refresh the breath (for example, dental sticks with eucalyptus, mint bones for dogs and toothbrushes produced by Mnyams). Or, if your dog is prone to allergies, seedless hypoallergenic snacks (grainless delicacies Grain free “Mnyams”). Thus, you kill two birds with one stone: motivate the dog to execute commands and make a tangible contribution to its health.
